Michael your comment on "free market" and "freedom" begs definition. Words are often taken out of context or provide context, but my comment might be better framed as "problematic" or hitting the nail on the head. A "free market" will always be defined by some powers, and that does not imply that "freedom" exists. "Freedom" will always existed in the context of(relation to) other forces, market or no. This is not to provoke or confound, but may just be paraphrasing your intent, as I seem to find in your conclusion. The need for providing... an equation for the real world, or rather for economics which is yet to reflect the real world and thereby address the "myopia of share ownership". Hint to self: regards dymamics of "free market" regulating power. Back to the drawing board?[Now I just may review the interview and two comments before "provoking". Earlier, I caught the lede of a "related video" by a grad student about getting economists out into the real world, but I have been unable to find it @inet...]

"Europe is not U.S. when it comes to austerity, infrastructure or other investments." The jackpot is that when it comes to comparing austerity, one must recognize the starting point. Also it is not the "entitlements" but the investing, or more accurately, the not investing or arrangement of payment. But it is a bit of a double-edged-sword that is not just about cuts. Austerity is not the only answer, but paying for it is. Europe may have more to pay for, but that is not just on the negative side of the ledger, as they have more social programs and infrastructure on the books and actual works. I might not be painting the clearest of pictures, but I am trying to show that Europe is a different picture than U.S.

Parallel Efforts

I had only inklings of the efforts of the U.N. but their culmination seem to be parallel to my beliefs that can best be represented by an Escher world. First there is the impression that there is a reality that is represented in mainstream media, not just a perspective. Then there is the perspective that the writer takes, on Samuel P. Huntington's The Clash of Civilizations I don't know if his interpretation or my own of Huntington is wrong, but I prefer to have a different perspective than his take from it. I don't believe Huntington is saying only what Heitner sees him as saying, or I am choosing to pick only what I believe of it, and tweaking the rest.

No matter, maybe. Setting aside the reaction that some perspectives will have to Al Jazeera International having a perspective that is not theirs, the efforts and results that we have experienced deserve the approach that Spain, Italy and France are taking. It will have it's own reaction, which should not be part of the equation, if some persist in their own reality which does not recognize perspectives at all.

If some think this is just philosophical falderal, then they should be reminded what maybe they know, that the be all and end all has been, the Bush philosophy.
